# International Law Database

> Search and analyze case law and legislation from 30+ jurisdictions across Europe, Asia-Pacific, and Latin America, directly in chat. Get cited, synthesized answers grounded in primary authority.

Search a dedicated International Law database directly in chat: a growing corpus of case law and legislation from jurisdictions across Europe, Asia-Pacific, and Latin America. Ask a legal question in plain language and scope the issue right in your query ("under German law," "UK unfair terms"). GC AI searches primary sources directly from the database and writes a cited answer. Every cited authority opens in a built-in viewer that shows the full text of the source and links to its official source.

<div style={{ position: 'relative', paddingBottom: '56.25%', height: '0', overflow: 'hidden', borderRadius: '8px' }}>
  <iframe style={{ position: 'absolute', top: '0', left: '0', width: '100%', height: '100%' }} className="vidyard_iframe" title="International Law walkthrough" src="//play.vidyard.com/FMP1hjVukasQDU1nh84EnM.html?" scrolling="no" frameBorder="0" allowTransparency="true" allowFullScreen={true} referrerPolicy="no-referrer-when-downgrade" />
</div>

## How it works

1. **Ask your question.** Type a legal question in chat. GC AI automatically searches relevant case law and legislation when your question calls for it.
2. **GC AI searches and reads.** GC AI searches the database for relevant case law and legislation, applies the sources to your issue, and provides a synthesized answer with citations.
3. **Verify your sources.** Click any citation to open the source in your citation panel. From there:
   1. Use the **Translate** button to translate the sources GC AI relied on into the language of your conversation.
   2. Click **View full text** to review the full text of the case law or legislation in the built-in viewer.
   3. Click **View original source** to open the document on its official portal in a new tab.

## Source controls

The International Law database is **on by default** for users with access. GC AI searches case law and legislation automatically whenever your question calls for it.

You can adjust your sources from the **+** menu in chat:

<Frame>
  <img src="https://mintcdn.com/gcai/lRZ_GNZzQ-E_dmAG/images/legal-databases/plus-menu-legal-databases.png?fit=max&auto=format&n=lRZ_GNZzQ-E_dmAG&q=85&s=9d2ba13e574a7ec1d589feb2e34bf145" alt="The + menu in chat showing the Web Search toggle and the Legal databases section with US Case Law, International Law, and Jurisdictions & coverage" width="660" height="468" data-path="images/legal-databases/plus-menu-legal-databases.png" />
</Frame>

* **Web toggle**: Turn off for legal database results only. This setting applies within a single conversation.
* **Legal databases**: Turn **International Law** off if you don't regularly need it in your conversations. This setting persists across chats. Keep it on to allow GC AI to automatically search within the database when researching primary law in covered jurisdictions.
* **Jurisdictions & coverage**: Filter your search manually by region (Europe, Asia-Pacific, Latin America) or by individual jurisdiction. Each jurisdiction shows whether it includes case law, legislation, or both. This setting applies within a single conversation.

<Tip>
  Specifying jurisdiction directly in your query (e.g., "under French law" or "compare Germany and Spain") is often faster than using the jurisdiction picker.
</Tip>

## What's in the database

The International Law database includes case law and legislation from 30+ jurisdictions, including:

* **Europe**: the EU and its member states, the UK, and other European jurisdictions and bodies
* **Asia-Pacific**: Japan, South Korea, Australia, and more
* **Latin America**: Brazil

What's included varies by jurisdiction. Some include only case law or only legislation.

Coverage is expanding. Additional jurisdictions are in development and will be added to the International Law database as they become available.

Authorities are sourced from official publishers like court websites, government legal portals, and official gazettes through Moonlit, a legal data provider. The database is refreshed daily.

<Tip>
  This page does not contain an exhaustive or live representation of current coverage. For full, current details on coverage, open the [Legal database coverage](https://app.gc.ai/legal-coverage) page in GC AI.
</Tip>

## Document viewer

Click any citation to open the full judgment or statute in the sidebar. From the viewer you can:

* Read the complete text
* Search within the document for specific terms
* Open the document on its official portal in a new tab with **View original source**

The viewer opens alongside your chat, so you can verify sources without losing your place in the conversation.

## Citations

Every authority GC AI cites links to the full text. The citation panel groups sources into case law, legislation, and web results.

* **Citation counts**: International cases show how many times later decisions cite them.
* **In-force status**: Some statutes and regulations show whether a provision is **In force** or **Not in force**. Not every source includes this data, so a missing badge is not representative of current status.

## Translation

When a cited passage is in another language, click **Translate** in the citation panel to use AI to translate it into the language of your conversation, or turn on **Translate all cited passages**. Translations are labeled, and **Show original** switches back to the source text. Translation is available in the GC AI web app, and is limited to sources retrieved from the International Law database.

## Case law summary tables

For multi-case research questions, GC AI may produce a structured summary table breaking down each case by:

* Citation
* Facts
* Issue
* Holding
* Application to your question

Summary tables are especially useful for jurisdiction surveys, comparing how different courts handle the same issue.

## Combining the International Law database with other work

Research using the International Law database works alongside everything else in GC AI. In a single conversation, you can:

* Upload a contract, flag risks, then research the governing law on specific issues
* Ask a legal question, then draft a memo incorporating the findings
* Combine web research and International Law sources for a comprehensive answer
* Use the International Law and US Case Law databases together for cross-border questions, if you have access to both

## Example prompts

* **Cross-border data transfers**: "Can we still legally transfer personal data from the EU to the US? Summarize the key recent EU court decisions and what they mean for a US software company like ours."
* **Contract clause enforceability**: "Under English law, how do courts interpret limitation of liability clauses, and when would a cap be subject to the reasonableness test in the Unfair Contract Terms Act 1977?"
* **Multi-jurisdiction survey**: "What are the employee consultation and notification requirements for a collective redundancy in Germany, France, and the Netherlands, including works council obligations? Summarize the key differences in a table."
* **Foreign-language statute**: "Under Japan's Act on the Protection of Personal Information, when do we need user consent, and what do we need to do to transfer personal data from Japan to the US? Include the recent amendments."

## The International Law database in Word

Chat in Word can access the same databases your account has access to in Web. In the Word add-in, citations can be verified by hovering or clicking on the citation bubbles, where the source is quoted. Open the document on its official portal in a web browser by clicking **View official source**.

## Availability

Team and Enterprise plans include one legal database of the organization's choice for their whole team: US Case Law or International Law. Team members who need both can get the other database as an add-on at an additional cost. To switch your team's database or purchase add-ons, contact customer support or your account team.

For Individual seats, US Case Law and International Law are available as [add-ons](https://gc.ai/pricing). Each includes a one-time free 30-day trial you can start during your GC AI trial or after you subscribe.

## Data and security

International legal data is provided by Moonlit, a subprocessor that provides the legal research database and search infrastructure. Its role is limited to providing legal research content and search infrastructure.

GC AI does not maintain an international legal corpus. Documents are fetched live from Moonlit's API when you search or open the full text of the source in the built-in viewer. Citation snippets and metadata are stored as part of your chat history for display purposes only.

## Common questions

### How does this compare to traditional legal research platforms?

Traditional legal research platforms give you a search interface to run boolean queries and read results. GC AI is AI-native: you describe what you need in plain language, and GC AI searches, reads, and synthesizes case law and legislation into a cited answer. Your time goes to evaluating the analysis.

For exhaustive research, like reviewing academic treatises or practice guides, some teams keep a traditional research platform seat alongside GC AI.

### How is this different from AI assistants built on proprietary legal databases?

These products add a generative AI layer on top of databases originally built for manual, keyword-driven research. The AI and the database are tightly coupled, and the fit between the two can affect the quality of results, especially when the underlying architecture wasn't designed for AI-driven retrieval.

GC AI's legal research capabilities were built around AI from the start. Case law and legislation are fetched live from a dedicated legal database and read alongside your contracts, playbooks, and company context, so the output is grounded in the work in front of you. Each citation links to the full text and its official source.

### How is this different from general-purpose AI platforms with legal plugins?

Some general-purpose AI platforms offer legal plugins that connect to third-party research databases and other legal tools. The research experience depends on which connectors you've set up and which subscriptions you hold.

GC AI is built for in-house counsel. The International Law database is built directly into the same workspace your team already uses for contracts, drafting, web research, playbooks, and company context, with control and verification designed into the experience. There are no modes to switch between and nothing to install.

### Is the International Law database available in shared chats?

Citations are visible in shared chats. Authenticated org members with access to the International Law database can click through to read the full text. Readers viewing a shared chat via a public link can see the citations but cannot open the full text.

### How current is the data?

Moonlit's database is refreshed daily. There may be a short lag before newly published decisions and legislation appear in GC AI, as Moonlit processes the data before it becomes searchable.
